On Wednesday April 19, 2017, fire fighters from the Goodwill Volunteer Fire Company responded to a fire on North Liberty Street at a Centerville Professional Building. While the identities of the victims have not yet been released, officials reported that a 58-year-old female victim sustained superficial burns to her face and upper body. The victim was taken by Maryland State Police Helicopter to John Hopkin’s Bayview Burn Center for further treatment and evaluation. No other injuries were reported.

The small fire occurred in the early morning at the professional office building housing Bridges Behavioral Health & Wellness. The Office of the State Fire Marshall said that the fire was accidental and was the result of the lithium battery inside the woman’s computer overheating, exploding and catching fire. A release by the Office of the State Fire Marshall indicated that a smoke alarm was present, but was not activated at the time of the fire.

The fire was extinguished by an employee before eight (8) members of the fire company arrived on scene. Approximately $1,500 in damage was caused by this small fire.
