Comair Flight 5191: Fatal Runway Crash in Lexington, Kentucky
The investigation into the crash of a Delta Connection regional jet being operated as Comair Flight 5191 during takeoff at Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Kentucky on Sunday, August 27, 2006 will focus on the contributing factors that caused the pilot to take the wrong route on the taxiway and takeoff from the wrong runway. The investigation lead by the National Transportation Safety Board is expected to shed important light on these facts.
“There is no reasonable excuse for a pilot taking off from the wrong runway” explains Keith S. Franz, head of the Azrael Franz aviation litigation team. “If the checklist protocol and redundancy in takeoff preparation had taken place this terrible tragedy would have been avoided.” 49 passengers were killed in the crash of the commercial twin-engine Bombardier CRJ-100 aircraft that attempted to takeoff from the 3,500-foot general aviation runway instead of the 7,000-foot runway designated for commercial airliners at Lexington's Blue Grass Airport.
“The family members of those killed on Flight 5191 are right to insist that those who are responsible for this tragic mistake be held accountable for the loss of these precious souls” stated Franz.
If a loved one is injured or tragically killed in an airline accident, the victim's family is faced with many challenges. Initially there are an overwhelming number of questions that must be answered. Ultimately the questions come down to, "Why did this happen?" There are of course numerous federal and local government agencies that devote tireless effort in pursuing the truth about an airplane crash. Often their answers educate but do not comfort the families of those who have been brutally affected. A comprehensive approach designed to assist each family member with the constellation of issues that they face both legal and non-legal, is necessary to best represent the interests of the family as a whole. One important challenge left to a victim's family is holding the negligent airline or responsible party accountable for their actions. In meeting this challenge, effective legal representation is critical.
